recently i tried more different roads from and to chengdu.
end of august and beginning of september i still traveled with the bus over erlangshan to kangding and it was kind of ok ( about 8-10 hours). but since then things changed.
some friends got stuck there for more than 26 hours in mid september. so end of september with a small group we took the road to danba and from there over jiajinshan to yaan,a detour but a stunningl scenery and only short before yaan the traffic problem starts again. on the way back i got a bus taking me the road over shimian-luding to kangding , which was surely better than erlangshan.
there would be also a more direct road from danba to dujiangyan and chengdu but unfortunately also there is heavy road construction and a tunnel will be buildt , so it sounds not really drivable until about 2016!?
though the roads aren't easy in this part of the world but with some good planning and luck you get to see more on the way and don't get stuck too badly..
2015 june: the buses still go kangding-luding- shimian-yaan - chengdu : about 8 hours without traffic jam
erlangshan is open, but as i know only the trucks go there , as there is still road construction at least until july/ august
